A first-then board is one of the simplest visual tools you can use with a young child. It shows two things: what happens first and what comes then. That is all, and that is why it works.
Why it helps
Many children find transitions hard because they cannot see what comes next. A first-then board turns "Do this now" into a clear, short sequence the child can see and hold on to.
How to use it
- Put the less-loved task under "First". For example: brush teeth, put on shoes, tidy up.
- Put something your child enjoys under "Then". Keep it short and real: a story, play time, a snack.
- Point and say it simply. "First shoes, then park."
- When the first task is done, move the card to "All done" and give the "Then" right away.
Tips that make it stick
- Use pictures, not just words, especially for children under 6.
- Keep the "Then" honest. If you promise the park, go to the park.
- Laminate the board and cards and add hook-and-loop dots so your child can move them.
